Solving for X - the hardest working band in show business

April 21, 2005

I came across this press release for a band called Solving for X. First I want to give KOODOS to the band for getting out there and working it. I wish more independent bands would show such initiative, but then it is that business vs artist mentality and few are ever both when starting out.

It's all well and good that Solving for X has been approved for an iTunes™ listing, but how the hell is anyone going to find them? Is iTunes going to promote them on the front page?

"Our philosophy is the more places you can find our music on the Internet, the more chances there are for people to hear and buy it" says Brian Wheat, bass player and marketing director for the band.

“To be added to iTunes' impressive catalog is validation that our music is as good as anything coming out of the major record labels

Hey Brian, Thanks for commenting. I think independent artists like yourselves need a new method of finding an audience. Not every band can afford a manager, and not every band has a "Brian Wheat" in the group. The Internet has helped bands get distribution, but as I have pointed out there are very few tools to help you find and build your audience. I would like to see these tools built, as I think they would provide both music fans and artists a new type of community and economy for discovering and sharing music. Good luck with Solving for X. Keep it up. I hope to see you and the band in Vancouver in the very near future!

David, I couldn't agree with you more. iTunes is a great thing...but it is only one of the four essential ingredients for success for any band: 1. a quality product, 2. effective and tireless promotion, 3.competitive pricing and 4. excellent placement (iTunes, music stores, and other means to buy the product). Going the independent route means that it is totally up to us to make ourselves known to people - that is the reason for the press release. But to be successful at this takes creative initiatives, persistent action, tireless perseverance, and an unbelievable amount of patience. It is a lot of work promoting Solving For X. Over time, I think it will payoff. The key is not to expect attention from anyone...there are a TON of great artists out there, all of which deserve attention. Thanks for picking up the story and writing about us. Brian Wheat Solving For X
