Hmmmm.... MySpace and IE got me to thinking

January 24, 2007

We've been dealing with some irritating CSS issues with IE 7 recently. When, Ross, one of our developers screamed "I wish they would just stop making this browser!"

To which James responded, "Ahh, dude, that's like the most used application on the Internet."

To which Ross retorted, "Yeah and MySpace is the biggest social network on the Net. That don't mean its right and neither is designer friendly."

To which I got thinking...

Is Internet Explorer the MySpace of browsers?

or

Is MySpace the Internet Explorer of Social Networks?

Think about it, and discuss.

Yeah, it was a weird day in the office today.

If either would pick a standard and stick to it we would be fine

Somewhere around the releast of IE7 myspace changed the way it handles the if !IE statement and now I can't get IE to behave with my div alignments. I don't know who's fault it is that IE and FF divs position like 100px different but it's friggin annoying.

I am about to go back to the days of "This site best viewed using XXX"

BAH!

I disagree.

I disagree. I think Safari, Opera and Firefox have no business being in the web browser industry. If they all left, web design would be easy and perfect.

Monopoly

"I disagree. I think Safari, Opera and Firefox have no business being in the web browser industry. If they all left, web design would be easy and perfect. "

Yes, yes, and there should only be one computer company because then you wouldn't have to develop for multiple OSs and there should only be one restaurant representing each style of food and there should be only Walmart, the others have no place in the industry and there should definitely be only one political party because it would make decisions so much easier.

...

Respectfully, Jordan, yours was an extremely silly comment to make.

Taking another route: I disagree. I think Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox have no business being in the web browser industry. If they all left, web design would be easy and perfect for Opera.

And because one may believe that and you believe another thing and person X believes another thing, it's a far greater reality to have choice.

MySpace IS the Internet Explorer of Social Networks

As a designer and already knowing the issues of IE and all the "Extra Rules" required to make it compatible, I would say MySpace is beyond frustrating. In fact I was thinking earlier today something along the lines of: Is Internet Explorer the MySpace of browsers? or Is MySpace the Internet Explorer of Social Networks? I think it is more MySpace IS the Internet Explorer of Social Networks, trying to keep the crowds contain in blindness from how it can be.

It's painfully true.

It's painfully true. IE is a miserable, broken wreck of a browser, but you can't NOT support it if you're developing websites. And myspace is critically flawed and overrated, but you can't ignore it if you're a band. It's all SO much fun for those of us developing websites for bands, who get the worst of both worlds ;)

Sadly so true

MySpace is hideous but your comment is so right.

...now if only MySpace could imitate Facebook in terms of design, functionality and inherent intuitive nature.

Hmmmm.... MySpace and IE got me to thinking

David, I am still waiting for the IE dartboard in the office. The little blue stress ball will have to do for now.
